日本人はいやだね

A comment made by the wife unit, not me, in response to something son told me during my visit to school last week.

There are a noticeable, but not large number of Japanese students on campus (school has ties to 2 schools in Japan) and the wife unit, in part of her last-minute ‘instructions’ to son, said he ought to make friends with some of them; for the trip last weekend, she even made a huge batch of curry rice sauce, froze it and had me carry it up so son could share it.

Well what son told me was he came up to a groups of girls, introduced himself (in Japanese), and their reaction was along the lines of いったいあんたはだれた?!, and then they fled, I was told,  like a flock of startled turkeys.

Ok, I wasn’t there. But knowing son, I don’t believe he came up to the girls with a おい、彼女よ!俺のところに遊びにこないか?line.

Son isn’t terribly upset over this, his reaction is more along the lines of WTF was their problem?

I remembered when I was in Utica, NY, usually new Japanese students were in flocks in the beginning….

  2. Utica? Isn’t Cornell U. there?

  3. Hope it wasn’t during the winter months! 🙂
